Spring Dreams

A belated thank you to Mary over at Little Red House for this award: The intent of Splaneyo was to keep our scattered family and friends abreast of the goings on here in Michigan. The idea that someone other than family actually reads it (for them it is required reading with quizzes every Friday) and, hopefully, gets a laugh or two from the chaos that is my life is fantastic. Thanks Mary for reading and the recognition - it means a lot coming from the author of such an all around beautiful blog.
Spring Tulip

Mary's post today is about spring fever and, just having bundled up three children to combat the 7 degree weather outside, I have to say I am right there with you Mary. Here is my spring dream for the day - what's yours?

Girls' Weekend

IMG_5588

This weekend, Sam and the boys were invited to a dad's weekend at a lake cottage (Laney would have been included too, but she was too young). So, it was just my girl and me. We did some shopping, ate some frozen yogurt, went on walks and smelled the flowers.

Spencer and Owen had a fantastic time. In total, there were 6 children between the ages of 3 and 6. They rode on a boat, ate smores (or "snores" if you are talking to Owen), slept in sleeping bags, took nature walks and did some hard core playing. I was glad they had a nice time, but, truth be told, I missed the little rascals. Hope you had a nice weekend too.

Michigan Rose

Michigan Rose

Happy Birthday Mom & Monty! It's true, my mother and father-in-law share a birthday. For the occasion, I thought I would post a picture of a flower from our garden. Since most people have a hard time growing roses in Michigan, I have renamed this prolific orange lily The Michigan Rose. Enjoy the rose - we are thinking of you both.

Take My Breath Away

Pink Poppy 2

No, I don't mean in the Top Gun Berlin love song kind of way - I mean the stop and stare sort of way. So lovely that you want to take in every detail. You know, the kind of beauty that just makes you want to linger.

Now that the weather has improved, the kids and I walk to and from school just about every day. Sure there are the days that I would rather struggle with buckling three children into the car than tell Spencer and Owen to get their shoes on one more time, but then I miss the chance to see these amazing poppies.

Actually, it is a bit ironic because it is one of the few times that they actually tell me to "hurry up".

Not now kids I'm basking!

So Soon?

gardening

Am I the only one that did not know about the Midwest gardening rule? This weekend I was politely reprimanded by my neighbor when she found me out in our yard planting away. “Oh, you’re planting already?” she asked. Apparently there is some “rule” about planting before Memorial Day, but after the long Michigan winter who can wait that long? I sure couldn't. Full of spring fever and ignorance, I bought my annuals, a few strawberries, tomatoes and, the necessary counterpart, basil. What can I say, I am a rebel (yes, without a clue)!

77

We had a high of 77 degrees today. It really is unfortunate this happened - now we remember how good it can be here in Michigan. The sun was shining, we had a nice breeze blowing and every once in a while the clouds rolling by would send down a sprinkle or two just to keep the plants happy. With these conditions, the bulbs are practically jumping out of the ground. We found this lovely purple crocus in our front yard and I think our tulips grew an inch right before our very eyes. The kids and I soaked it up because we have become smart to Michigan weather and we know that this day was a gift - thank you!
