The "You Get What You Pay For" Cake

Whimsical Fondant Cake - Front

Here it is, cake #4 - the cake for the sweet 16 birthday party taking place this evening. Have you ever had the experience of making something for yourself and it turns out fantastic and then you make the same thing for someone else and it is an utter disaster? Well, this was one of those situations. I volunteered to make the cake for this surprise party and for some reason the fondant was very dry. I tried all of the recommended fixes; when that didn't work I tried making more; when that didn't work I started getting nervous. I certainly did not want this cake to be the "lovely" cake the neighbor made. I made another trip to the store to buy different ingredient brands - that didn't work either, so I just had to make do. I would like to say I learned something from this experience, but technically, I still don't know what went wrong. I do think my neighbor learned a lesson - be wary of neighbors bearing cakes (i.e. there is no such thing as a free cake). As you can see, at the end of the day I did have a cake to send. Because the fondant was dry, it was not exactly what I had hoped for, but you can stick candles in it and it probably tastes okay. It is a chocolate pound cake with carmel buttercream frosting. Have a look, but not too close please!

Let's be perfectly clear about this Sweet 16 birthday cake...it was nothing short of spectacular...much like the person who made it. When the cake was brought to the table, all guests had the same look of awe (raised eyebrows and gaping mouths). In fact, every head in the restaurant turned to see the whimsical masterpiece. Not only did the cake look amazing, but it was delish. It was the perfect cake for a very special party...and we couldn't begin to put a price on the happiness it brought to the birthday girl! A million thank yous!

are you crazy? This didn't turn out? It looks amazing! You are being too hard on yourself.
This cake looks like a professional bakery did it. I am sure the neighbor loved it.

You are awesome! A sixties saying - "you blow my mind!!!!" INCREDIBLE CAKE!!!!!!! Truly - the work of cartoon magicians not real people laboring in a kitchen praying to the baking gods. You are one amazing woman!

Wowzers! That is some cake! You have inspired me to give fondant a try. Although, I will be embarrassed to show it to anyone we both know. Can you just make Hailey's cake and send it?

What are you talking about, the photos of the cake do not show any dry fondant. Great job. I am please that I have inspired you to create masterpieces like this one. Like an artist you need to look at the whole rather than the parts. Fabulous job.
